the reference goats of R Corner Ranch

Lost too soon. We miss her so much, but I see her every day in our orange herdsire, Pumpkin Spice. We said goodbye 6 days after she delivered a live buckling for us.  Despite vet care and my efforts, she declined. Her loss and the feeling of helplessness pushed me to learn more and be better for the next Treasure. Vet care failed her. I was told the treatments people in the goat community recommended to me were “not traditionally done in goats,” so the university vet opted not to do them. He wanted to continue supportive care instead of treatment. Higher pain medicines were given to mask her pain, instead of stepping up with actions. Every day I, knowing a goat’s shut down rumen can lead to organ failure, told the vet I wanted them to tube feed her to restart her rumen after she had not eaten. I knew I hit a wall with the vet. That Friday, I got the call she was in organ failure. It was a lesson for me. From what I understand, research has suggested banamine given beyond its recommended period and at higher doses or more frequently can cause kidney failure. With Treasure already having slightly elevated kidney values the vet was monitoring, I believe he made the wrong treatment plan. It may also not be good choice for goats with retained placentas, as research shows it increases the odds of retained placenta and metritis. We, as the goat owners, are their first line of defense to protect and mend them along with care under a vet, but we must also learn to be prepared for when vet care is not enough. Let’s face it, vet care for goats is lacking experience and eduction. Find a vet who is willing to listen and work alongside you. Hopefully, vets and goat owners can learn together and do better for these wonderful animals.

Her farm name is Delilah. She reminds me of Winnie the Poo with her adorable face and light gold coat. She has many amazing half sisters from the same sire. Her dam and relatives are amazing as well. Her udder is nicely attached in her udder arch. Her dam, Twin Willows J Dream Catcher, had a 9.9% butterfat and earned a Bronze JUJU for butterfat production in 2018 as a 2nd time freshener. She ranked at 80 percentile rank (top 20%) for her production evaluation. She milked 4.4 lbs and 4.2 lbs on milk test in previous homes. Udder pictures below are with a doeling nursing without separation.
