3rd freshening+ Nubian Does

Frances is the boss. Every goat knows she is the queen (even Nebula). She was a very good first time freshener producer and a great mother. She is very demanding for attention and backrubs. She will eat almost anything you offer, including dewormers and mineral gels. Oranges and banana peels are a favorite! I skipped breeding her for 2022 kids because she can be the boss of me, too. Her second freshening in 2023, she surprised me with a much more productive udder, easy to milk teats, and a great attitude about milking time in 2023. She peaked unofficially at 12.9 lbs a day inbetween milk tests (9.3 lbs officially). I learned a lot my first year of milk testing and will not leave kids on my does for milk test days! It threw off her end of year results (by about 550 lbs of milk) due to those first 8 weeks she had her bucklings nursing. In 2024, her 3rd freshening, she peaked at 15.1 lbs!! What a doe!
Frances is an American Nubian. She appraised 87 GVVA in 2024. I’d like to see more fore udder and a few other things to help support that udder. She’s a bit lean in my fancy photos from this year, so I will try to get a few more now that production is slowing a bit, and she’s back in better body condition again.

Clip her to a fence, put some feed in a cup, and milk her. That’s as easy as it is to get milk to feed bottle baby goats. Flora is a very easy milker. She prefers to be hand-milked, but with teats that flow so easily, it only takes a minute or two. She is learning to stand still for the milking machine, though. Flora gets very jealous of any goat getting milked and lets the barnyard hear her opinions about it. She is a nice goat to have around the farm. We love all her friendly, easy going girls. Her Mini Nubian daughters are set to possibly out milk her next year. One maybe even this year! I am going to use Flora for my Mini Nubian program after seeing how incredible her Mini Nubian daughters’ production and mammary structure are compared to their size. They also have nice breed character.

Reba is goofy. She drinks out of the milking room sink. She has to have a ritual to get up on the tall and scary metal stand, circling in a certain direction and with her head in a bucket full of feed, but she had no issues with our small wooden stand. “Honestly, she is a very easy milker, especially for a first time freshener,” I said ignorant of her 3rd freshening wildness. She was just too overweight for me to overpower to the stand, so I left her son on her as a wether this year. I decided to make Reba a low priority for milk testing in 2024. Maybe next year. She seems to be a natural babysitter and loves goat kids. Her father is a champion buck, and I believe she will earn a milk star when the time comes. She had a nice butterfat average her 2023 lactation over 6%.
